Set in the Adelaide Hills, this Cellar Door is an extension of the established Bird in Hand Winery. It brings a new tasting, business and small meals experience into the program of the site. Made for exclusive visiting hours the structure is set away from the main winery, overlooking the vineyards and adjacent dam.
As a product, wine is far removed from its original source, the grape. However correlations between the final product and its source are still evident. This idea – the interrelationship between the ‘natural’ and ‘manufactured’ was appropriated to the surrounding site and used to generate form for the structure. Hill models were abstracted and applied with an angular process. This process represented the mechanized nature associated with winemaking. The structure contrasts the immediate setting of the site, however draws upon it as source of creation.
